Transitional Bilingual Education Law is adopted.

Passed by the Massachusetts legislature, it requires bilingual classes for school districts with at least 20 students from a single language group who not proficient in English. It makes Massachusetts the first state in the U.S. to require that students be taught in their native language. The requirement is removed as the result of passage of a state-wide initiative petition in 2002.*
